The Annual Astronomical Night
SPHAERA’22, the 12th Astronomical Night of Girls’ High School Kandy was held on 2023.03.24 due the Sri Lankan economic crisis raised back then. With the glorious presence of Dr. Karunanda Premasiri as the chief guest the night was organized at the school premises in a magnificent manner with 200+ participation of both inner school and inter school Astro enthusiasts, the event focusing on the Inter school friendship and knowledge sharing among all the students.
Accordingly, a lecture series was also organized for the Astronomy lovers of the school, FASE conducting a professional level workshop for the participants of the night, keeping them actively energetic and well skilled on the practical side of the Astronomy as well beside the theories and equations always comes to mind at the mention of the subject.
Also along with the night, Ruth Allen Challenge Trophy, the inter school Astronomical Quiz Competition was organized for the 13th time, 30+ teams from different schools competing with each other for one trophy, and the Ananda College, Colombo being the inevitable champions they are, took the shield to their school once again.
And so marking another milestone of High School Astronomy, SPHAERA’22 was successfully concluded.
The First Ever Intra-School Astronomical Night
SPHAERA’23, the first ever intra-school Astronomical Night of Girls’ High School Kandy was held in a grand manner on the 27th of September at the school premises, the immediate past principle of the school, Madam M. Abeygunasekara taking the honor of participating the event as the chief guest for the night.
The Astronomical Society of KGHS is a well-known association in the Interschool events, always taking part in such events and working with other schools side by side. Therefore, eager to share the experience with the fellow Ladies of High School, and give them the chance to experience a standard Astro Night within the school level itself, the dream of High School’s first intra school Astronomical Night was brought to life by the ASGHSK Executive Committee’2023.
Accordingly, SPHAERA’23 was held especially for the young Astro-enthusiasts of the school with various Astronomy related activities planned just for them. The interesting lectures of Dr. Prasanna Liyanage and guest speaker Mr. Yohan Gunathilaka about the firing topics of the fields was able to quench their thirst for the most part while the workshop which was conducted by the past committees of the society making them practically introduced to the subject through different activities full of fun and knowledge, even giving them the chance to launch their own water rocket as well.
In conjunction with the night, many other projects were launched as well for uplift the knowledge of Astronomy, giving top priority to the school level itself. Therefore SPHAERA’23 Intra-School Quiz Competition and the Intra-School Fiction writing and Video competitions were organized inspiring them to explore the curiosities of the universe all the while conducting Astronomy classes and workshops to make sure they are perfect in balance with theories and logical part of the subject as well, even organizing a movie date to teach them how to look at the cinema in a scientific eye.
Not only that but not letting down the glory of the High School Astronomical Society hold between the interaction with other schools and societies, SPHAERA’23, the Intra-School Fiction writing and Video competition was also have been held, taking the committee year to the Inter School level as well.
And so, giving opportunity of having the experience of a full time experience of a standard Astro Night to our fellow ladies of High School, SPHAERA’23 was successfully concluded.
