Identity

School Crest

Girls High School Kandy CrestA school without a crest and motto is rather like a boat without a rudder. We had nothing to steer by, no noble thought that belonged peculiarly to us to inspire and guide us, no symbolic picture to remind us of that thought till our crest became a reality, an almost living reality. The crest seems to us a sentient thing, looking down on us today. As it will on the girls this school hundreds of years hence, encouraging and inspiring us with its wonderful symbolism of health, strength, purity, and cheerfulness.

The Motto

School Anthem

Forty years on when we think of time olden
Mem’ry will picture our girlhood’s bright years,
Forty years on in the dim distance golden,
Laughter still ringing, forgotten the tears,
Smiling again as the outline grows bolder,
Going once more through our work and our fun,
Visions will leave us, Though forty years older,
Proud to the last of our school honors won,

(chorus)

Follow on! Follow on! Follow on! Follow on! Follow on!
Working hard now with book and with pen,
And thus earning the right to rest then,
Follow on! Follow on!

Meeting with zest our opponents at Netball
Those were great matches we played on the pitch;
Dancing and games and debates in the school hall,
If but our lives could be once more so rich!
Greeting the goals scored with cheers that rang loudly,
Watching the passing with joy or with fears;
These be the mem’ries that we’ll recall proudly,
As we look back through the dim distant years,
Follow on!

(chorus)

Forty years on when afar and asunder
Parted are those who are singing today,
When we look back and forgetfully wonder,
What we were like in our work end our play;
Then it may be there will often come o’er us.
Glimpses of notes like the catch of a song;
Visions of girlhood shall float then before us,
Echoes of dreamland shall bear them along,
Follow on!

(chorus)
